The mediaeval era featured Bhakti and Sufi poetry, while the Bhakti and Riti periods introduced poets like Surdas and Tulsidas. Modern times saw the rise of realism by writers like Munshi Premchand. In contemporary works, diverse themes were explored by writers like Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Gulzar. Post-independence globalisation influenced experimental literature by authors such as Krishna Sobti.
